Rick Hirsch 4 - live jazz in State College PA
The Rick Hirsch 4 is a contemporary instrumental quartet. Saxophone-driven jazz, funk, soul, Americana, rock. State College, PA. Central PA.
the RICK HIRSCH 4
Rick Hirsch's electric quartet interprets rock and pop music through their unique filter of post-bop and modal jazz, drum-and-bass, and R&B. They reinterpret classics by the likes of The Beatles, Van Morrison, Nirvana, and Eric Clapton.
The RH4 also performs the evocative originals of saxophonist Rick Hirsch, an award-winning composer in his own right. And though they're making music without a net (i.e. their game plan is to expect spontaneity), everything they do is rooted in melody and groove.
Pittsburgh native Jeff Beck, whose day gig is as one of State High’s exceptional visual arts teachers, is a serious bassist who anchors this quartet — and solos up a storm. He’s a grad of the Cincinatti Conservatory and is a force to be reckoned with. Indeed.
Kevin Lowe is the color man in the drum chair. A native of Ithaca, he’s one of the finest drummers in the state. His taste is impeccable and his approach to group playing is creative and very groovy.
Guitarist Mac Himes is the guy for jazz guitar in Central PA, hands down. He’s equally at home on arch-top and solid-body guitars, and likes to keep everyone guessing with his ever-growing array of effects pedals.
Saxophonist Rick Hirsch has performed with luminaries ranging from Tito Puente to Max Roach, Rufus Reid to Tim Hagans, and the Four Tops to the Temptations. He is the primary instigator in this conglomeration.
